Cool the Earth is a small nonprofit in the environmental services sector that uses consumer-focused social marketing to encourage energy-saving actions in households. Its approach centers on children to motivate families to undertake simple, measurable steps to address climate change. The program has catalyzed more than 190,000 pledges and saved over 130 million pounds of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. Founded in 2006 by concerned parents in Marin County, California, Cool the Earth began as a school-to-home program in two local schools and later expanded to reach more than 175 schools in the Bay Area and beyond by 2010/11. As a grassroots nonprofit with a very small team, the organization operates in the environmental services space by leveraging school networks to promote household energy conservation.
