The Crown Prosecution Service prosecutes criminal cases that have been investigated by the police and other investigative organisations in England and Wales, operating as an independent body within the justice system. Its central aim is to ensure the correct person is charged with the appropriate offence and to seek justice where possible. It decides which cases should be prosecuted, sets charges in serious or complex matters, and provides guidance to police in early investigations. It also prepares cases and presents them at court, and offers information, assistance, and support to victims and prosecution witnesses. Based in London, the CPS works with the police, courts, judiciary, and other partners to deliver justice. In 2026 it launched its first stalking action plan to address evolving offences in the digital age.
