CUNY Building Performance Lab is a mid-sized research organization based in New York City, New York, established in 2006 to improve energy efficiency and performance in public and commercial buildings through research and training. Its work encompasses professional education for professionals across facilities and real estate management, building operations and maintenance, and energy services and consulting. The lab collaborates with city agencies, including the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability and the Department of Small Business Services, to offer Building Operator Training for operators of small- to mid-size apartment buildings at no cost. In its research, it has partnered with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory to train operators and instructors in Building Re-Tuning (BRT), a protocol intended to reduce building energy use. Since 2012, the Energy Data Lab has engaged New York City's public university students in municipal energy management, and a 2021 development introduced a Heating Season section to help diagnose and address common inefficiencies.
