The Dauphin Island Sea Lab is Alabama's marine education and research institution, established by the state legislature in 1971 to reduce redundancy in higher education. It sits at the eastern tip of Dauphin Island, with Mobile Bay, the Mississippi Sound, and the northern Gulf of Mexico forming its coastal context, a setting that supports a wide range of marine science activity. The organization coordinates university programs for Alabama colleges and universities, offering graduate and undergraduate studies year-round, and conducts research in biogeochemistry, oceanography, and systems ecology, with field sites centered on Mobile Bay and extending to locations such as Mexico, Australia, and the Arctic. 

Discovery Hall Programs handles K-12 field experiences, professional development, and public outreach through the BayMobile traveling classroom. The public aquarium, the Estuarium, guides visitors through ecosystems from the Mobile-Tensaw Delta to the northern Gulf of Mexico. The Lab collaborates with regional partners such as the Mobile Bay National Estuary Program and is led by Executive Director Dr. John Valentine; in 2025 it announced updates to its Alabama Real-Time Coastal Observing System (ARCOS).
