The Davey O’Brien Foundation, based in Fort Worth, Texas, administers the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award, the nation’s oldest national quarterback honor, recognizing candidates who demonstrate character, teamwork, sportsmanship, and leadership in both academics and athletics. The award originated in 1977 when Charles Ringler and members of The Fort Worth Club established the foundation and the O’Brien Memorial Trophy to honor a Fort Worth sports figure. Initially, it recognized the top player in the Southwestern states, and four years later it expanded to a national scope with a focus on the quarterback position. Beyond the core award, the foundation has created several related honors, including the Davey O’Brien High School Scholarship, the Davey O’Brien Legends Award, and the Charles Ringler Founder’s Award. To date, the foundation has distributed more than $1.3 million in scholarships and university grants to support student-athletes transitioning leadership on the field into leadership off the field. In late 2025, the foundation participated in The Home Depot College Football Awards, announcing finalists for its award ahead of the ceremony where the winners are revealed.
