Deaf West Theatre is a United States–based performing arts organization founded in 1991 and anchored in the Los Angeles area. It specializes in sign language theatre, with programs designed to enrich the cultural lives of the 1.2 million deaf and hard-of-hearing people in the region. The company is widely regarded as the premier sign language theatre in the United States and is the western United States’ only resident deaf theatre, with a focus on educational innovation for deaf and hard-of-hearing youth. It is a Tony Award–winning organization. Recent activity includes a collaboration with Disney in 2026 to develop Songs in Sign Language, which presents ASL-reimagined sequences from films such as Frozen 2, Encanto, and Moana 2 for Disney+. The project, involving Disney Animation Studios and Deaf West Theatre, reflects the company’s role in expanding access to performance through ASL-enabled concepts and streaming platforms.
