DETCOG acts as a regional association for local governments across 11 counties in Deep East Texas, including Angelina, Houston, Nacogdoches, Newton, Polk, Sabine, San Augustine, San Jacinto, Shelby, Trinity and Tyler. It functions as both a political subdivision of the State of Texas and a federally chartered Economic Development District, and it is one of 24 regional Councils of Governments in Texas. Headquartered in Lufkin, the organization covers about 9,413 square miles and is regarded as one of the largest rural COGs in the nation. 

DETCOG is governed by a 58-member Board of Directors, with more than two-thirds elected officials representing member counties and cities. It aims to facilitate planning, avoid duplication, and promote efficient, coordinated regional development, while not possessing taxing or ordinance-making authority. Recent activity includes the launch of a Broadband Assessment and Action Plan to improve internet access across the region.
