DARPA is an independent research and development agency within the U.S. Department of War, dedicated to creating and preventing technological surprise for national security. Based in Arlington, Virginia, it collaborates with researchers across academia, industry, and government to pursue high-risk, high-reward work. Rather than pursuing incremental gains, the agency seeks transformational breakthroughs that can redefine defense capabilities and influence civilian technology. Historically its innovations have contributed to significant civilian and military technologies, including early internet capabilities, automated speech and translation, and GPS embedded in consumer devices, as well as foundational work in mRNA vaccine research. DARPA supports a broad innovation ecosystem to accelerate discovery and collaboration and, in 2026, announced that Quandela would participate in Stage A of the Quantum Benchmarking Initiative.
