The DeKalb Public Library serves the city of DeKalb, Illinois, and its surrounding area, located roughly 60 miles west of Chicago. Its core population is about 44,000 residents, and the library maintains a collection of more than 150,000 physical items alongside a broad range of digital resources. As a member of the PrairieCat consortium, patrons have access to more than a million items, and the library provides wifi, computer access, and training to community members. The library operates seven days a week and is governed by a Director and a Mayor-appointed nine-member Board of Trustees, with board activities open to the public. It is organized into six departments—Administration, Facilities, Public Relations and Events, Adult Services, Youth Services, and Access Services—and uses a mix of full-time and part-time staff. In 2025, the library formed a partnership with AARP Foundation Tax-Aide to provide tax-return assistance to patrons.
