The Department for Transport (DfT) is a UK government department responsible for shaping and delivering the country’s transport framework. Working with partner agencies, it supports a transport network that enables business activity and the movement of people and goods. It plans and invests in infrastructure to keep the country moving and oversees English local authorities’ road networks, including improving passenger and freight travel and developing major schemes. The department also operates and maintains England’s motorway and trunk road network, and sets the strategic direction for rail across England and Wales by funding Network Rail, managing rail franchises, and regulating rail fares. 

DfT seeks to improve English bus services through regulation and funding, and it pursues lower-carbon transport to reduce congestion and pollution, including support for cycling and walking. It promotes the adoption of new technology and maintains high safety and security standards across transport modes. It also provides policy and planning for ports in England and Wales, supporting the maritime sector, and sets national aviation policy in collaboration with airlines, airports, the Civil Aviation Authority and NATS. The department is based in London and serves local authorities, transport operators, and the traveling public.
