The Department of War Information Activity (DWIA), operating through War Media Activity, serves as the Department of War's public affairs and information arm. It disseminates department news and information to U.S. forces worldwide via radio, television, print, the Internet, and other media channels, reaching personnel on land, at sea, and in the air. The organization collects and preserves the DoW's visual information records and trains Public Affairs and Visual Information professionals, educating roughly three thousand two hundred students annually. It oversees a portfolio of DoW brands recognizable to service members and the public, including Soldiers Magazine, Navy All Hands Magazine, Marines Magazine, Airmen Magazine, American Forces News Network, Joint Hometown News Service, the Defense Information School, and the Defense Imagery Management Operations Center. DWIA also operates the Stars and Stripes newspaper as an editorially independent outlet and maintains the Defense Visual Information Records Center in Riverside, California, which houses the department's photos, videos and audio and coordinates with the National Archives. In early 2025, Defense Media Activity coordinated full-day coverage of the Super Bowl for overseas audiences, illustrating the ongoing international reach of its broadcasting and media operations.
