The Roman Catholic Diocese of Cheyenne encompasses the entire State of Wyoming, to include Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. The rich history of Catholicism in Wyoming began on July 5, 1840, when Father Pierre-Jean DeSmet said the first Catholic Mass near Horse Creek, at the Green River Rendezvous, in present-day Sublette County. Since then, with our Diocese established in 1887, we have grown to 33 parishes and missions. Our state is a land of wide open spaces and sparsely populated towns, but our people are faith-filled and tightly-knit, bound together by a love of God, country, community, and a Western spirit unique to this special place.
