The DKFZ is Germany's largest biomedical cancer research center and a member of the Helmholtz Association. Based in Heidelberg, Baden-Württemberg, it comprises more than 100 divisions and research groups and a substantial staff that includes many scientists. Its mission is to understand cancer mechanisms, identify risk factors, and develop strategies to prevent cancer while advancing tumor diagnosis and treatment. The center also runs the Cancer Information Service (KID), which provides information about cancer to patients, families, and the public. It is organized into seven research programs with core facilities that support routine research tasks, complemented by management and administrative departments. In early 2026, DKFZ formed collaborations with other leading institutions, including a partnership with Stanford Medicine.
