Since its inception in 2001, Doors of Change (formerly Photocharity), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, has helped place more than 2,500 homeless youth ages 17–25 in long-term safe housing throughout San Diego County. Our outreach workers are on the streets four times per week searching for homeless youth. They post information about available services in key locations. When a youth contacts us, or is found by staff, our case managers immediately begin building a trusting relationship and connecting them with critical resources. These include ID documents, medical insurance, mental health referrals, domestic violence support, and housing navigation. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the need has sharply increased. Housing referrals rose from 83 in 2020 to 161 in 2021 and 287 in 2022. Doors of Change is supported by a strong mix of public and private funding. Approximately 50% of our support comes from private donors and fundraising events, with the remainder provided by foundations and County grants. Since 2001, Doors of Change has raised nearly $6 million. Our primary fundraising events are music concerts featuring renowned headliners such as B.B. King, Three Dog Night, Los Lobos, Charlie Musselwhite, and Tommy Castro. Former homeless youth and organizational leaders speak at these events to raise awareness and inspire new donors. The music community has played a significant role in our mission. Many artists have donated signed memorabilia, helping us raise $868,000 through auctions. Contributors include Billy Joel, Elton John, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, B.B. King, Aretha Franklin, and many more.
