Dos Mares is a small environmental services organization based in Black Mountain, North Carolina, focused on protecting marine areas in Central America. It seeks to enhance the value of coastal protected areas by engaging local communities and broader society, aiming to ensure these areas contribute to social, cultural, and economic well-being while supporting conservation and research activities. The organization proposes three lines of work—Educational Recreation, Inclusive Conservation, and Relevant Science—intended to provide practical services within protected areas and attract support from broader stakeholders. Its approach addresses challenges such as limited public funding, fragmented private involvement, and the inadequate development of visitor services in protected areas, with the goal of transforming degraded management practices into ongoing, value-generating protection and use. Dos Mares operates from a small team and emphasizes community- and society-oriented outcomes rather than relying on large-scale external funding.
