The Downers Grove Sanitary District is a small to mid-sized municipal utility that provides sanitary sewer services in Downers Grove and parts of neighboring Illinois communities. As an independent unit of local government, it manages more than 250 miles of sanitary sewers and nine wastewater pumping stations to collect wastewater for treatment. Wastewater is treated at the district's treatment center in Downers Grove, and the resulting effluent is discharged to the East Branch of the DuPage River or St. Joseph's Creek under state permits with EPA oversight. The district serves about 20,000 customers, with wastewater generation supporting more than 60,000 residents, and it has the capacity to treat up to 11 million gallons per day. Headquartered in Downers Grove, Illinois, the district operates independently of the municipalities it serves, and in June 2025 it launched a customer billing portal to improve service access.
