When Lito’s son Cal was born with Down syndrome (trisomy 21), everything changed. By the time Cal turned nine, he had endured nine major surgeries. Each procedure raised more questions about care, and most of all, about the pace of scientific progress. What Lito discovered was staggering. Despite being one of the most common genetic conditions, Down syndrome remained one of the most underfunded areas in medical research. That’s why DownSyndrome Achieves, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing Down syndrome research, was founded. We exist to accelerate innovation, bridge the gap between families and the scientific community, and reimagine what’s possible through a more inclusive and collaborative approach to genetic research. Our national biobank, housed at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, is a groundbreaking resource that provides researchers with critical biosamples to drive discoveries. More importantly, it allows families to actively shape the future of care for individuals with Down syndrome. This is about more than science. It’s about health equity. It’s about diversity in research. And it’s about ensuring a brighter, healthier future for the people we love. Our mission is clear: Eliminate the health complications associated with Down syndrome and improve outcomes for all. Because when families and researchers work together, change isn’t just possible…it’s inevitable. Send us a DM today if you’re a family member of a loved one with DS or a researcher wanting to learn more. We want to connect.
