The Durham Literacy Center is an independent education organization based in Durham, North Carolina, focused on free literacy and job-readiness skills for adults and out-of-school youth in Durham County. Its offerings include reading and writing instruction, English classes for immigrant adults, and preparation for high school equivalency exams such as the GED and HiSET. The center also provides career pathways guidance, basic computer skills training, and GED and life-skills instruction for incarcerated youth at the Durham County Detention Center, relying on hundreds of volunteers to reach more than 600 students annually, and over the past thirty years it has helped more than 16,500 residents advance.
