The Département des Alpes-Maritimes is a department-level government administration in France, based in Nice in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. It employs several thousand people and operates within a framework of decentralised governance defined by laws since 1982, encompassing social action, infrastructure, transport, education, culture, and local development. Following the 2004 Act II of decentralisation, the department gained new competencies in health programs, housing through the Fonds de solidarité pour le logement (FSL), and education staffing and meals, along with the transfer of some patrimonial domains in culture. Beyond formal powers, it pursues a proactive approach in areas such as employment and economy, environment, planning, sport, and the creation and diffusion of culture to meet regional needs.
