Early Steps is a New York City nonprofit that helps families enroll their young children, typically as kindergarteners or first graders, in independent schools. The program aims to expand access to diverse, inclusive learning by bringing students from different backgrounds into the same classrooms from the outset and by partnering with member schools that share a commitment to equitable education. Based in New York City and established in 1986 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit by ISAAGNY, Early Steps has facilitated the enrollment of more than 4,000 children of color. It offers a year-long package of services for eligible families, including workshops, school referrals, application assistance, and guidance in the school-selection process.
