The Ecological Society of America is a nonprofit, nonpartisan association of scientists founded in 1915 to advance ecological science by improving communication among ecologists, increasing public awareness of ecological science, expanding resources for research, and ensuring the appropriate use of ecological science in environmental decision making through dialogue with policymakers. The organization serves the ecological science community and related stakeholders by publishing six journals, convening an annual scientific conference, and broadly sharing ecological information through policy engagement, media outreach, and education initiatives. With about 9,000 members, ESA operates within the book and periodical publishing space, providing scholarly content and professional resources. It is based in Washington, District of Columbia, and in 2026 expanded its partnership with Datadryad.
