The ED Office of the Chief Data Officer (OCDO) is a unit within the U.S. Department of Education focused on treating data as a strategic asset. It oversees information collections approvals and the related clearance process, manages a centralized data inventory, and develops an infrastructure to support data-driven decision making across the department and with external partners. The OCDO operates through three divisions—Governance and Strategy, Analytics and Infrastructure, and Innovation and Engagement—that collaboratively shape the department’s data strategy, governance policies, and open data initiatives. Based in Washington, DC, the office aims to improve efficiency and outcomes by leveraging both traditional and emerging analytical approaches. The organization serves internal staff and the broader education sector by coordinating data across the department, the federal government, and the public and private spheres.
