ECWA is a small nonprofit organization in environmental services based in Durham, North Carolina, focused on restoring a healthy Ellerbe Creek to strengthen connections between people and the natural world. The group protected its first six acres in 1999 and has since expanded land holdings to include five nature preserves it manages for public recreation, water quality, and habitat restoration. Through land acquisition, collaboration with the city, and public education, ECWA pursues a vision of a living creek that links human and natural communities in Durham, enabling residents to bike or walk the watershed and visit local businesses and preserves along the way. Its work engages local residents and visitors seeking access to nature and educational programming related to the watershed, often in partnership with community institutions. In 2020 ECWA introduced staff from the North Carolina Natural Heritage Program to the area, following years of community education about a heron rookery.
