The Energy Institute, based in London, England, is a chartered professional membership body for energy professionals worldwide. It was established in 2003 through the merger of the Institute of Petroleum and the Institute of Energy and operates as a registered charity incorporated by Royal Charter. Its purpose is to advance a just global energy transition to net zero by attracting and developing the energy workforce, informing decision-making with expert guidance, and helping industry and consumers use energy more safely, efficiently, and with lower carbon. It is licensed by the Engineering Council to award Chartered, Incorporated and Engineering Technician statuses, and by the Society for the Environment to award Chartered Environmentalist status, with a unique Chartered Energy Manager designation. In 2026 it expanded its offerings with an e-learning course on energy management, alongside ongoing initiatives and publications such as International Energy Week, the Energy Barometer, New Energy World Magazine, and the Toolbox app.
