Enifer is an Espoo-based biotechnology company founded in 2020 as a spin-off from the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. It upcycles dilute side streams from the food industry into PEKILO® mycoprotein, a high-protein, high-fiber ingredient intended to support more sustainable protein production and healthier diets with less environmental impact. The PEKILO® technology originated in commercial forest-industry applications in Finland and is being developed for broader food and animal-nutrition uses. Its customers include food manufacturers seeking stable, high-protein ingredients that can be integrated into existing production lines, with a focus on animal nutrition and pet foods. Recent developments include a collaboration with Rovio Pet Foods to develop semi-moist dog treats containing PEKILO® mycoprotein (over 60% protein) and ongoing expansion of the animal-nutrition portfolio, including dog-feeding studies and participation in Purina's Unleashed accelerator. The company is pursuing international expansion, with regulatory reviews underway, production scaling in Finland, and plans to engage the United States, while collaborating to produce PEKILO Pet and PEKILO Aqua in Brazil from corn ethanol side streams.
