Ensemble Studio Theatre (EST) is a New York City-based performing arts organization focused on developing and producing new American plays through a collaborative process. Founded in 1968 by Curt Dempster, it has grown into a community of over 600 ensemble artists who support playwrights throughout their careers and create original, provocative works that engage audiences across the country. Positioned within the contemporary theatre landscape, EST serves both emerging and established artists by nurturing new voices and connecting them with audiences. The company runs programs to support developing writers, such as its Youngblood initiative. In recent years, leadership transitions have occurred: longtime artistic director William Carden stepped down, and in 2023 Estefanía Fadul and Graeme Gillis were named co-artistic directors.
