Esselunga, based in Pioltello in Lombardy, is a major Italian retailer in large-scale distribution, with roots dating to 1957 when the first supermarket opened in Milan. It operates more than 180 stores across Lombardy, Tuscany, Emilia Romagna, Piemonte, Veneto, Liguria and Lazio, supported by a substantial workforce. Beyond retail, Esselunga directly produces a range of goods, running production centers in the Milan area, Novara, and Parma to make fresh pasta, baked goods, and various prepared foods, including meat and seafood such as sushi; it also maintains Elisenda, a pastry workshop created in collaboration with the Da Vittorio restaurant. Esselunga was among the early adopters of online grocery and continues to develop an omnichannel approach. The group also operates Parafarmacia in 35 stores and includes Bar Atlantic with 110 restaurants and eb beauty with 45 boutiques. It earned the Top Employers Italia certification in 2022, and in May 2026 appointed Claude Sarrailh as Chief Executive Officer.
