Estyn is the Welsh government's office of inspection for education and training. Based in Cardiff, Wales, it operates within the government administration to assess and report on the quality and standards across a broad spectrum of education and training provision. Its stated vision is to improve outcomes for all learners, and its mission is to help providers develop a self-improving culture through guidance, inspection and capacity building. Estyn inspects a broad range of settings and services, including nursery, primary and secondary schools, special schools, pupil referral units, independent and all-age schools, further education and independent specialist colleges, as well as adult community learning. It also covers local government education services, teacher education and training, Welsh for adults, work-based learning and learning in the justice sector. Serving education and training providers across Wales, Estyn operates as a government office that supports improvement through assessment, advice and capacity building, rather than providing direct instruction.
