EFSA is a decentralised agency of the European Union based in Parma, in the Emilia-Romagna region, established in 2002 after a series of late-1990s food crises. It provides scientific opinions and risk assessments on issues across the food chain, and its work underpins European policy and legislation in food safety. The remit covers food and feed safety, nutrition, animal health and welfare, plant protection, plant health, and the potential impact of the food system on biodiversity. Internally, EFSA combines a core staff with a network of external experts, totaling around 565 personnel and collaborating with more than 1,500 specialists. Its primary audience comprises EU policymakers and member states that rely on scientific input to shape safety rules and guidance for the food sector.
