The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) is an independent EU authority established in 2011. It operates within the EU's financial supervision framework and collaborates with national competent authorities that are members of the European System of Financial Supervision, as well as with the European Supervisory Authorities—the European Banking Authority and the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority. Headquartered in Paris, in the Île-de-France region, ESMA is a sizeable public policy organization. Its remit involves coordinating supervisory activity across EU member states through its interactions with national authorities and the other European Supervisory Authorities.
