The European University Institute is an international postgraduate teaching and research institution located near Florence, Italy. Established in 1972 by six founding Member States of the European Communities, it aims to provide advanced training for doctoral and postdoctoral researchers and to advance research relevant to Europe’s development. It hosts a diverse international community drawn from 23 contracting states, comprising four academic departments—Economics, History, Law, and Political and Social Sciences—along with affiliated centers and programs such as the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies and the Florence School of Transnational Governance. Based in San Domenico di Fiesole in the Tuscany region, the institute relies on a sizeable academic and administrative staff to support its work. In March 2026, it announced a formal partnership with the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs to deepen joint research on security challenges.
