Europol is the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation, headquartered in The Hague, South Holland, Netherlands. Its core objective is to improve safety for EU citizens by supporting the 27 member states in fighting serious international crime and terrorism, and by collaborating with partner states outside the EU and with international organisations. Operating as a central node in European security, it provides operational support for police actions, serves as a hub for information on criminal activity, and acts as a centre of law enforcement expertise.

Its scope covers a wide range of illicit activities, including drugs trafficking, human trafficking, facilitation of illegal immigration, cybercrime, intellectual property crimes, cigarette smuggling, euro counterfeiting, VAT fraud, money laundering and asset tracing, mobile organized crime groups, outlaw motorcycle gangs, and terrorism. Europol serves national and international law enforcement partners and functions as a core coordinating body within the EU security framework. The agency employs a mid-sized workforce and recruits professionals through temporary and contract appointments, including seconded national experts.
