Expand Networks was a technology company that helped pioneer the WAN optimization market by delivering solutions described as virtual proximity across wide area networks. Founded in 1998 and based in Roseland, New Jersey, the firm operated as a small-to-mid-sized player in the computer networking products industry. The company served a global customer base of more than 4,500 and deployed over 50,000 units, including a notably large installation of more than 4,200 devices. On 11 January 2012, Expand Networks was liquidated, and most of its assets were sold to Riverbed Technology, which immediately terminated all products and ceased support. As a result, the company no longer operates independently, and its footprint in WAN optimization was subsequently absorbed by Riverbed.
