EyeWire runs as a crowd-sourced neuroscience project presented as a game, created in collaboration with Seung Lab at Princeton. Approximately 200,000 participants across 145 countries engage in the activity, and no scientific background is needed. The effort uses gameplay to map the three-dimensional structure of neurons and to advance the project of charting the connectome, beginning with retinal connections. In the research services space, EyeWire enables volunteers to contribute to neuroscience research and helps scientists understand how neurons connect and form networks. It also supports the development of artificial intelligence and computational technologies used for mapping the connectome. Based in Boston, Massachusetts, EyeWire operates as a small organization.
