There was no greater icon than Bridgeport Machines Inc. (BMI est. in 1939). They were well known for their iron, BOSS series controls (Bridgeport Operating System Software), and EZ-Traks. These systems were designed to withstand the harsh conditions of a machine shop environment, and their software was way ahead of its time. Unsurprisingly, many shops still run the old 1980’s BOSS CNC machines.
In 1982, Bridgeport’s EZ-CAM CAD/CAM software came to market. Many agree that the software’s quality aligns with BMI’s reputation and exceeds the technology of its superior controllers. Anyone who could read blueprints and operate machinery could quickly grasp EZ-CAM. Machinists began holding tighter tolerances and achieving part finishes they had never seen before. Knowledge of G-code programming was no longer critical.

Today, EZ-CAM is one of the most affordable, sophisticated, and easiest-to-use wizard-based CAD/CAM systems. Supported machines include mills and routers equipped with 2-axis through 4-axis (full wrapping) and 5-axis positioning; plasma and lasers; 2-axis lathes with live tooling, sub-spindle, and two turrets; and 2-axis through 4-axis EDM. All vintage model controls and today’s most advanced systems are supported through a vast library of post-processors (G-code translators).

Programming from blueprints, 2D CAD data, and solid models is feasible. You can import files from all CAD systems using their various export options. Solid models enable feature recognition, streamlining the programming process.
