Festival of the Arts is a community celebration in downtown Grand Rapids that takes place during the first weekend in June – this year that's June 6, 7 and 8. Every year, Festival presents the best performers in West Michigan on six stages, inside and outdoors! Music, dance, theatre arts, and much more - all presented free of charge. It's the largest all-volunteer arts festival in the nation. In 1969, Alexander Calder’s La Grande Vitesse was installed in front of City Hall in downtown Grand Rapids in an area now called Calder Plaza. “La Grande Vitesse” is French for “the great swiftness” or “the grand rapids.” The Calder inspired a three-day community arts celebration to be held annually each year in June. Alexander Calder created the original Festival sun logo – still in use today – as a gift for the event.
