The Finnish Forest Research Institute (Metla) was a government-funded sectoral research organization established in 1917, operating under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and based in Vantaa, Uusimaa. Its mission was to promote economical, ecological, and socially sustainable management and use of forests through research. On January 1, 2015, Metla merged with MTT Agrifood Research Finland, the Finnish Game and Fisheries Research Institute RKTL, and the statistical services of the Information Centre of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, forming the Natural Resources Institute Finland, known as Luke. Metla's research priorities included forest-based enterprise and business activities, the social impact of forests, the structure and functioning of forest ecosystems, and maintaining an information data bank on forestry and the forest environment. The institute operated in a context where Finland is among the most forested countries, with about three-quarters of its land area covered by forests, underscoring the importance of forest research. As part of Luke, Metla contributed information and know-how intended to support the well-being of society.
