History Founded more than 140 years ago, The First National Bank of Fort Smith is the oldest national bank in the state of Arkansas. The bank was organized February 29, 1872, as "The National Bank of Western Arkansas." In 1888, the name was changed to The First National Bank of Fort Smith. After three decades of steady growth, the landmark eight story white brick First National Building on the corner of Sixth and Garrison was constructed. Under the leadership of past and current presidents, the bank has grown to be one of the largest in Fort Smith and one of the largest in the state.
