Fisheries and Oceans Canada, also known as Pêches et Océans Canada, is a federal department responsible for managing Canada’s fisheries and safeguarding its waters. It aims to protect fisheries, including aquaculture, through sustainable management and by supporting Indigenous participation, while ensuring the network of harbours remains open and well maintained. The department guards oceans, freshwater, ecosystems and species from human impacts and invasive species, relying on science and collaboration with Indigenous communities. It maintains waterways year-round to keep them safely navigable for mariners and all Canadians, and coordinates maritime incident response through its Coast Guard fleet in partnership with Indigenous communities. The organization is based in Ottawa, Ontario, and holds a national mandate within the government. In February 2026, DFO launched the Whalesafe Fishing Gear Strategy to establish a national framework aimed at reducing deadly entanglements for whales.
