The Florida Education Practices Commission is an autonomous, state-level entity within government administration that oversees educator disciplinary actions. Based in Tallahassee, Florida, its authority and membership are established by statute, and it also handles violations of final orders, updates its rules, and performs duties to safeguard the professional integrity of Florida educators. The Commission's Business Office coordinates hearings, issues final orders, and maintains permanent archives of its records. It trains and coordinates about 30 volunteer commissioners from across the state who decide disciplinary cases based on the record, mitigating and aggravating factors, and established guidelines; it also administratively suspends and reinstates educators for non-payment of child support, processes certificate surrenders, forwards disputed cases to the Division of Administrative Hearings, files records on appeal, and determines indigent status as the lower tribunal.
