FOCUS, short for Friends of Choice in Urban Schools, is a DC-based nonprofit in the civic and social sector. Its mission is to support the district's diverse public charter schools by advocating for greater autonomy, equity, and quality. The organization works directly with public charter schools and their communities, providing a comprehensive start-up program and ongoing technical assistance to strengthen school capacity and operations, including help with facilities access and appropriate funding. Through these efforts, FOCUS aims to expand high-quality public school options for DC families. Founded in 1996, FOCUS has served as a principal advocate for public charter schools in Washington, DC, contributing to the policy framework that created charters and to resources that sustain them. Today, DC’s public charter sector comprises 114 schools serving about 39,000 students, reflecting the scope of FOCUS's long-running work.
