Folklight’s mission is to strengthen communities through authentic storytelling. Storytelling began as a prehistoric, worldwide tradition that strengthened communities through sharing their stories, values, and wisdom. That was storytelling’s original, fundamental purpose. Stories are everywhere. Each person in every town and every city has stories worth telling - and now more than ever, they have the tools to do so, with a camera, a keyboard, and a screen in every pocket. But for many, the domain of storytelling beyond a social media posting remains out of reach - a composite factor of cost, skill, and capability. A person with a big story to tell has little chance of doing so. Our greatest stories, and perhaps our greatest storytellers, may very well exist outside of Los Angeles and New York, and Folklight is for them - providing resources, education, and know-how to enable these individuals and their communities to tell their stories. As storytellers ourselves, we know that good stories told well resonate globally. In the words of a favorite TV writer, Angelina Burnett, “Stories are empathy machines.” We are embracing a new generation of local storytellers, and doing it on a global scale. For about the cost of Netflix, subscribers in one local community attend events, classes, and workshops that keep them connected to the making of films and TV series that are authentically inspired by their community. The subscription fees support both the subscription membership events and provide a portion of the financing for commercially-viable and professionally produced films and TV series which are distributed globally.
