The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is a government agency established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 to unify and govern food safety standards nationwide. It sets science-based standards for food and regulates manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import to ensure safe, wholesome food for human consumption. It functions as a single reference point for food safety, shifting from a multi-departmental regime to a unified authority with enforcement carried out by FSSAI and the State Food Safety Authorities. Based in Delhi and overseen by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, the agency operates as a mid-sized government body. The head office is located in Delhi, with leadership appointed by the Government of India. In early 2026 it rolled out digital improvements to streamline licensing and compliance processes, including online licensing in West Bengal.
