FAES is a mid-sized nonprofit focused on education administration programs. It is based on the NIH Bethesda campus in Maryland and was established in 1959 by 11 NIH scientists to support the NIH biomedical community through educational and professional programs. The organization provides affordable online continuing education, conference management, and community resources, along with didactic courses and hands-on workshops in a range of life-science topics, with options to tailor training for organizations.

The target audience includes NIH students and the broader biomedical research community affiliated with NIH, with support services that extend beyond coursework to include a scientific bookstore, conferences and cultural events, training, fellows' support, lectures, and housing. FAES also operates in service to professional development for scientists, expanding access to specialized topics and emerging areas. A recent development noted in its communications is the 2021 launch of a six-credit Bioinformatics Curiosity digital badge, reflecting ongoing credentialing efforts.
