In October, 1958 Carl H. Wiese and Helen Kay Larson co-founded a small community newspaper, then known as Security Advertiser, serving the communities of Security, Widefield and Fountain and surrounding areas; published by Shopper Press, Inc. 
Over time, the paper grew to quickly become the Fountain Valley community's main source of local news and advertising. It has been delivered EVERY WEDNESDAY by carrier and by mail subscription since 1958. It enjoyed being the only locally-owned and operated news source in the Fountain Valley for more than four decades. 
FVN was a female-owned and operated business in recent years. Kathryn A. Wiese-Moore served as owner/publisher since 1994.  The business was managed by her two daughters: General Manager Karen Johnson, who joined the staff in 1994, and Office Manager Patricia St. Louis, who had been with the paper since 1981 and previously served as Executive Editor before stepping back into a part-time role. Executive Editor Karin Hill came on board in 2019. 
Throughout its six decades of existence, the paper and its staff earned numerous awards from the Colorado Press Association as well as many honors from local service groups and other organizations in the area and El Paso County. 
Unfortunately, the downward trend for newspapers across the globe also struck home. Although relatively stable until COVID-19 hit, the paper was dealt major financial blows in 2020-2022 due to various COVID-related business impacts, inflation, etc. Despite our efforts, there was no saving the newspaper.  It published its last issue on Dec. 28, 2022.
Since 1958, we served as the Fountain Valley area's "hometown" community newspaper, and it's a title/honor we will cherish; after all, this is our home, too! A few volunteers continue to provide local news on a very limited basis on Facebook and other social media. We remain open to exploring opportunities for an online-only newspaper.
