The Fraunhofer Institute for Open Communication Systems FOKUS is one of the leading institutes in applied research for information and communication technologies (ICT). Since 1988, the institute has been researching and shaping digital transformation and its effects on society, the economy, and technology. FOKUS offers commercial enterprises and public administration the entire range of research services, from requirements analysis, consulting, feasibility studies, and technology development to prototypes and piloting. The institute's researchers work in the six business units "Digital Public Services", "Future Applications and Media", "Quality Engineering", "Smart Mobility", "Software-based Networks" and "Collaborative Safety and Security" in nationally, European, and internationally funded research projects as well as in contract research for customers. In doing so, the researchers use the institute's access to a world-class R&D infrastructure and test environments, internationally renowned and interdisciplinary Fraunhofer expertise, and an international network of experts from research, industry, administration, and politics. This enables FOKUS to identify emerging market trends early, set impulses for future technologies, and build successful partnerships with all key players in the industry. Cooperation occurs in individual projects or within the framework of long-term cooperation agreements. The research priorities and competencies lie in the areas of: • Distributed systems • Digital networking • Software engineering and architectures • Application of artificial intelligence • Simulation and data analysis • Infrastructures and platforms • IT security • Quantum computing Prof. Dr. Manfred Hauswirth heads the institute and holds the "Open Distributed Systems" chair at the Technische Universität Berlin.
