The Mission of the Museum is to preserve the Frederick County railroad, to educate the public on the history and historic significance of the railroad, and to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation for Frederick County's railroad and business history.
The Museum intends to stimulate and encourage the collection, preservation, and interpretation of Frederick County history through educational conferences, publications, awards, educational programs, consulting services, and related educational activities; to coordinate and further the programs of the states of Maryland and Pennsylvania and Frederick County's other local historical societies and local historians by functioning as a service organization and communication network; to cooperate with appropriate individuals, organizations, and institutions on the local, state, or national levels in projects and activities that will promote and sustain a general interest in history.
The railroad was part of the local social fabric, and the Museum will recreate the role the railroad played in communities' through events such as the local fairs and events as well as operating a demonstration railroad.
The Museum also intends to help preserve the practices, methods and skills that were necessary to authorize, survey, engineer, locate, construct and maintain railroads over the period of 1865 through 1950 while maintaining and restoring the museum's artifacts, rolling stock and physical assets of the railroad.
