Free the Slaves is a mid-sized anti-slavery organization based in Washington, D.C., operating in the international affairs sector. It seeks to cut off the conditions that enable modern slavery by helping communities develop freedom approaches that fit their particular needs. The group strengthens the capacity of grassroots organizations, government agencies, advocacy coalitions, and the media to take action, and it supports vulnerable communities through education, mobilization, and improved access to education, vocational training, and essential services. The organization also assists liberated individuals with reintegration into families and communities and records success stories to illustrate outcomes. It conducts systematic assessments of its programs to ensure accountability and ongoing improvement. In October 2019, the organization announced the appointment of Bukeni Tete Waruzi as executive director.
