The Friant Water Authority is a government agency that administers the Friant Unit of the Central Valley Project, delivering water to more than one million acres of irrigated farmland on the east side of the southern San Joaquin Valley. Water is diverted from the San Joaquin River at Millerton Reservoir (Friant Dam) and distributed via the Friant-Kern Canal to the south and the Madera Canal to the north. Much of the water-right framework for Friant Dam comes from U.S. Bureau of Reclamation agreements, with the largest contract providing about 800,000 acre-feet per year to the central San Joaquin Valley near Mendota, and its operations rely on Shasta Dam, the Tracy Pumping Plant, and the Delta-Mendota Canal to enable those exchanges. Based in Lindsay, California, the authority serves contracting irrigation and water districts and local cities, supporting regional water supply and groundwater resources as the system expands. The Cross Valley Canal, completed in 1975, connects the California Aqueduct to the valley and is complemented by pumping groundwater to meet local needs. In 2026, leadership changes included the promotion of Johnny Amaral to chief executive officer and the appointment of Eric Limas as chief operating officer.
