Friedreich's Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA) is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to curing Friedreich's ataxia through research. Based in Downingtown, Pennsylvania, it supports basic and translational FA research, as well as pharmaceutical and biotech drug development, clinical trials, and scientific conferences. The organization was founded in September 1998 by patient families and three leading FA scientists, and for many years operated as an all-volunteer entity until late 2005. FARA acts as a catalyst, linking the public and scientific communities to enable worldwide information exchanges that advance FA research. In December 2019, Jennifer Farmer was named chief executive officer.
